Word doodles. I wouldn't expect it to be cogent. |
The greatest gift of WdC is friendship and respect. Two people I have been lucky to call my friends are Sophie and 4Ps. They are smart and kind and generous. Reading their work, judging contests together in the past, joining in activities together, I know I became a better writer and a better person because of their influence. I am grateful. |
I spun Eri silk most of the afternoon. A box of goodies arrived from my sister, inks, a limited edition fountain pen, and my favorite: she sewed me a minion's pillow case and a pair of my little pony scrub pants. They are awesome. Tonight watched the Minions Movie. The guy at the store who said it was just too much minions was right. Too neurotic and intense, yet still funny. |
A lot of things have happened lately. Firstly, I am still struggling with the horror that is Paris. Its really pushing all my buttons. I finally had to turn off the tv and the news and step away from it. When you reach the point where you feel your heart is breaking from the media saturation of hate mongering, victims, the knee jerk shit of kicking closed the Golden Door... enough. Last night I came home. It was windy and cold. I am still bummed out that the 19" snow blizzard completely missed Boulder. We got the wind of up yo 50 mph, but yeah, we got rain not snow. Anyway, came home and there was a giant box... 4' tall. ???? I ordered nothing. Struggled to get it inside, was barely able to fit it in through the door. And behold, it was a cherry Matchless Schacht wheel. Someone sent me a freaking $1,600.00 spinning wheel I lusted after!!! It took 2 hours to get it assembled. Below is a generic picture from online. The shop it came from also included 2 pounds of Cherviot wool. Which is really awesome as its a breed of sheep that I haven't spun their wool yet. Below is the new wheel. I think I will call the Lendrum wheel "Inigo Montoya" and the Matchless Buttercup. Below is a link to a site that sells these. Copy and paste into a browser tab. http://www.woolery.com/store/pc/Schacht-Matchless-Spinning-Wheel-Cherry-Double-T... |
As promised, below are the things spun during Spinzilla. The pile on the chair is 3.5+ miles of yarn. And the lace was started during the event, but finished last night. Its a 3 ply 100% silk spun from 75 grams of silk. |
Another wet and overcast day. It is peculiar, but in spite of the low temp (in the 40s and 50s) all the clouds had what looked like heat lightening coursing through them. A few bolts hit the ground close to me, loud explosions. I cooked up a large pot of soup, chicken and rice it will be, with dumplings added tomorrow. K and S went down to a Mexican store on Federal in Denver, and had texted me. I asked for Dixon and Chimayo if they could find them. Shocker, they did, but it doesn't look like real Chimayo, which is light with hints of chocolate. They also brought back 1/2 pound dried Pablanos, Carne Asada mix, sweet paprika, horseradish powder. Curious about the latter, I usually make it homemade in November, and I make it super hot. They stopped at the store and bought lunch meats, buns, bread, mayo and cheese lol. My friends are feeding me during Spinzilla, because I won't stop to cook. The below pic is what I plan to spin. The brown on top is Corridale, from a fleece I washed, picked, carded by hand. The colorful stuff is called BFL, or Blue Faced Leicester (pronounced "lester.") Its for socks. The black and white is superfine black Merino wool with white silk strands. There is almost 2 pounds of it, enough for 2 sweaters. The green is Superfine Merino and Tussah silk again more than a pound and a half, way more than is needed for a sweater. The Blue is for scarves and mittens, almost a full pound. I've been depressed all day, depressed and still sad. I just miss my friends. |
Today is crazy overcast, the ceiling is maybe 500' and the belly of the clouds seem as if they'll brush the Flatirons. It seems like an equinoctial storm, with all that crazy lightening. The season is finally turning, even though it was an insane 90 on Monday. Up in the high country they've had some snow, over on Rabbit Ears Pass and Berthoud Pass. I can't believe it is almost October and it hasn't snowed here yet. I occurs to me I didn't mention the weird public suicides here. Last week a guy hung himself, from a tree whilst on his knees, across from my vets, about a mile from here. Two days later a guy that lives in this HoA hung himself, again from a tree in public, right next to the bike path... maybe 60 yards from my house. I don't know if there was another one, around 3:30 last night we had 9 different sirens: fire, cops, ambulances on my street. To say it has been odd and disconcerting is a bit of an understatement. On other fronts, I am finally breaking in a new Mac laptop. This has 15" retina display, 16g ram, dual core i7 processors. I was very torn between this and a loaded Air. For Christmas I'll probably get a new iPad. The mini is nice but too small a screen for these old eyes. |
