The Tobey Maguire Spider-Man came out in 2002, the summer that I went to Germany before my senior year in high school. I had seen the movie before I left - it was my first real comic book inspired movie that I had seen that really tried to be a big film. Despite not quite following the real origin (picking MJ over Gwen, for instance, as a female lead), I loved the movie and - like I did back in the day - bought the soundtrack before heading to Germany.

The closing credits rolled to the song Hero by Nickelback. Not a band I really care for, but a decent way to roll the credits on this film. A few friends on the trip were so obsessed with this song that we'd listen to it over and over at night while hanging out.

I remember staying at a hostel that was an old castle that had been converted into a stay house. We'd go out on the balcony at night, over looking the vineyard, and play this soundtrack over and over.

I also began seeing a boy from the German school we were visiting while I was there. On the last week of our stay, he took me to the movies. He hadn't seen Spider-Man yet, and I thought since I had already seen it in English, that it would be a little easier for me to follow along with in German with the dubbing.

Let's just say I didn't see much of the movie again - about halfway through, we were that obnoxious high school couple on a date, making out in the back of the theater. Sorry to everyone who had to witness that. What can I say? Sven was a hottie.

I lost this CD while on the trip, but I still have fond memories of this not-so-great film because of all of the ties that lead me back to the amazing time I had in Germany that year.

The first musical I ever truly fell in love with was RENT. I was a quintessential RENT head from the minute I heard the soundtrack. For years, I had never even seen the musical live. I just spent my time with my two best friends singing the whole soundtrack as if we were the characters, taking our parts and running with it.

The first time I ever saw RENT was in Milwaukee. My then boyfriend paid for me and two of my best friends to come out and see the show. We were so thrilled. I don't think we even slept the night before. I'd brought my original script I'd printed out from the internet, my piano book (I didn't even play piano...) and we all listened to the whole musical over and over on the drive from Minneapolis out to Milwaukee.

We were awestruck from the second everyone took the stage. It was SO MUCH MORE than we had even expected. It was like seeing the ocean for the first time. So stunning, so big, so many senses to take in. I was a kid in a candy store.

It only furthered our obsession with RENT. To this day, I have seen it 7 times in three states. The last few casts weren't all that great, so we've taken a little break from making sure to catch every troupe that comes through.

I love the nostalgia and emotions that listening to this whole soundtrack brings to me, every time.

From the moment I read the Hunger Games, I was hooked. Years ago I had read most of Battle Royal, and while the idea of making kids fight to the death as some sort of socio-economic tool was not new, it was brought down to a more young adult level. Characters had more depth. The story had more meaning.

I adore the world Susanne Collins painted. How evil she made President Snow. He never had to get his hands dirty, himself. He truly believed what he was doing was right. The connections, the twist at the end leaving Katniss the pawn in another game she never wanted to be a part of...

I think the series ended the only way it could have. I know a lot of my friends wished she had ended up with Gale -- how romantic to think the long time friend who had always stood by her side would be her hero. Katniss didn't need a hero. She needed someone who needed her as much as she needed them, and Gale could never be that for her. His turn into the military super soldier seemed far more fitting for his character

I digress.

The "soundtrack" that was put out after the original movie release was, and still is, phenomenal. Songs from District 12 and Beyond is a collection of songs that fit the mood of the Hunger Games or that were inspired by the movie and book. What I love about this whole album is that you can actually hear where these songs might have appeared in the film, itself.

There was very little music once the Games begin, which is a unique way of filming. None of the songs on the 'soundtrack' are actually in the movie at all. Still, I always imagined Tomorrow Will Be Kinder playing gently as the director leads the viewer around District 12 for the first time, showing the poverty and dire straits that the Capitol has left them in - for the good of all.

I highly recommend the album, if you haven't heard it yet. If your a big fan, it's right up your ally!

One of my all-time favorite TV Series is Scrubs. It very quickly went from a quirky comedy show to being very deep and balanced. One of my favorite episodes is My Philosophy. JD addresses his theory that, in hospital life, there is always balance. Life balances death. There is always one for the other.

This whole episode is so complex. Each of the main characters goes through something that is left hanging in the balance – testing JD’s philosophy. As we reach the end of the episode, his inner monologue declares that not everything needs to balance. And just like that, a patient he knew well codes and passes away. Everything DOES eventually balance.

In the closing of the scene, the song “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin” by Colin Hay is sung by the cast. It highlights each one of their struggles, the open decisions, and all the things left hanging out in the balance, leaving the viewer wondering how each one of these circumstances will balance the other out. It’s incredibly emotional. It’s one of those scenes I can’t watch without tearing up. It’s acted beautifully and the point is perfectly depicted.

I remember downloading the original song after watching this episode. It was very meaningful to me in that time of my life. I was really struggling with my place in the world, what I was here for, and whether or not I even wanted to stick around and see how things panned out. My depression had been under control for a long time, but a series of bad relationships and what felt like a dead end job, financial trouble, and no real sense of purpose left me struggling to be anything close to happy.

I put this song on a CD for my now husband at one point. I listened to this CD again recently and said to him ‘wow, I was really unhappy back in 2008, wasn’t I?’. And I was. Everything was chaos. Nothing was balanced. But as JD’s philosophy articulates… everything will eventually balance out.

I was only four years old in 1988 when Who Framed Roger Rabbit originally made its debut, but this movie has a firm place in my childhood. I remember first watching it on my VCR off of a taped from TV – most likely HBO – cassette tape. The combination of live action and animation thrilled me. I couldn’t get enough.

I had a routine on the days I was home sick from school. I’d watch Mr. Rogers (mostly for the How It’s Made section), then I would pop in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, usually twice – skipping the scene where the DIP melts Judge Doom. That part was just creepy. I can still hear his Toon scream as he melts and it makes me shudder every time.

This year, as I got more into Cosplay, I even attended a Halloween party as Jessica Rabbit. The ingenuity of this movie was far beyond it’s time, and I still appreciate just how incredibly well done it was. Utter perfection!

Oh my my my... Another secret guilty pleasure of mine would be hip-hop music. If it has a great beat, good drops, strong vocals... I don't care what they are rapping about. Gimme!

Hip hip has actually been scientifically measured to be some of the best music for working out or running. It keeps heart rates elevated, the beats give strong movement indicators to keep steady pacing, and it's typically heavy drum beats which are very primal and play to the hunter instinct in the human brain.

That being said... Tech N9ne is not the cleanest rapper. BUT this song constantly amps me up for my longer runs and keeps me moving my feet when I feel like slowing down. My husband introduced me to this song when we used to go to the gym together, and it's been on every running playlist I have made ever since.

If I have a guilty pleasure, it's emo rock.

I won't call either of my two favorite emo rock bands musical geniuses, but they write some damned good lyrics. It's not just broken heart syndrome songs, it's emotionally charged poetry.

I chose Panic at the Disco over Fall Out Boy only because I have been listening to them a little more than FOB recently, and their latest albums do sound a lot alike. There are some good differences between FOB and PATD, but both Pat Stump and Brendon Urie have very similar vocals.

I love, love, LOVE the stinging snap of their vengeful lyrics and the emotionally charged way they belt them out. I'm such an emo kid at heart that it's not even funny. Still, this is one of the most surprising additions to my music collection I find more people commenting on.

And when it comes to Rock Band... You can pry the microphone out of my cold dead fingers before I let anyone else belt out my emo rock.

When I was in high school, Dance Dance Revolution was the big thing in all the arcades. My brother owned his own dance pads and the Play Station system, so we got to have this party game right in our living room.

I spent HOURS dancing to all the latest hits from Japan, moving and shaking to the flashing arrows on the TV screen.

One song in particular had my heart. It was called Kick the Can and I was determined to get a flawless score on medium difficulty. I can't tell you how many times I played that song. It was easily over 100 times. Part of me truly believes that if we hooked the system back up, muscle memory would kick in and I'd still be able to groove to that song.

PONPONPON reminds me of that bubbly Japan pop every time I hear it. I'm instantly brought back to the time when this was my favorite pass time.

Specific to this song, I'd never heard of Iggy Azalea until I saw this music video. Do I care who she is? Nawh, not at all. I don't typically listen to this kind of music... but I LOVED this music video.

I am a child of the 90s through and through. Clueless was such a classic in my day. I still love the movie and it's a favorite for the background when I'm working around the house.

Iggy's song is such an earworm with such a great video. It's hard not to stick it in the guilty pleasure list!

Back in 2008, I met my now husband for the first time. We had known each other for 8 years through the internet and penpalling, but we had never come face to face. He lived in New York, I lived in Minnesota... But when we were finally out of college, living on our own, it meant we had more time and freedom to finally meet in person for the very first time in our friendship.

I had a few inklings that he may have had a crush on me. I wasn't entirely certain how I felt about him at the time, but just getting to see him and hug him for real was so exciting.

We spent three whirlwind days together and when it was time for him to fly home, we finally kissed. It was perfect... but he was leaving. We both shyly parted ways and spent the next few months in silence.

When I found out he had gotten back together with his troublesome ex-girlfriend I was furious. But at the same time... what right did I have to him over her? I hadn't come clean and told him I had feelings for him, so who was I to be jealous?

I remember listening to an old college playlist and coming across Girlfriend and screaming it out while cleaning my apartment. It was exactly how I felt at the moment.

Thankfully their stint back together was short-lived, and when I broke up with my summer fling, we finally quit being idiots and admitted we had feelings for each other. Sometimes love gives you the run around, but you end up where you're supposed to be.
