Morning Call
Hello. Hello. I’m ringing over here, can’t you hear me?
Y’know what, every morning it’s the same thing. I ring. I buzz. I light up like the fourth of July, and does she pay me any attention?
Of course not. I don’t know why I bother really, Mom is going to shout up the stairs any minute now anyway.
“Claira! Time to get up. Breakfast is ready.”
See? I think she does it deliberately – I mean, she picks me up quick enough if there’s a text or Facebook update.
Hah! Not sure what I make of all this Facebook stuff. Amber loves it. She’s Claira’s suave new laptop. Ultra thin, swish orangey backing and a personality to make you choke. Seriously, I have 3G too, y’know. And a calendar function. And I’m small enough to fit in her pocket.
But oh no, it’s Amber that gets the attention. It’s Amber that gets switched on every night and played with. Never mind that I’m the one sitting in her rucksack at school, getting squished by the lunchbox and those hideous old textbooks. Last week she spilt juice on me. Thanks! Like my life isn’t complicated enough without having deal with liquidized fruit.
Oh great, she’s stirring now. Finally. Wonder if I’ll get taken down to breakfast. That’ll upset Amber. She hates being left up here on the desk. Mind you, she’s nearly left me behind a couple of times, that’s fine unless she leaves me here for all to see, or if Mom tidies up and sticks me on the desk next to Amber.
Ugh, the jeering. You’d think someone as posh as Amber would have better manners, but no; some neat-freak human plonks you down beside the computer and you have to spend the rest of the day listening to the snide remarks.
Like Claira takes her anyway apart from Downstairs.
Me, I get to go to school (it’s dull and I’m on silent most of the time), and music practice (I’m still on silent), dance class (yeah, silent again) and the cinema (hey guess what, silent). But hey, I also get to hang out down the mall (when did Amber last do that?) and ride in her pocket when she goes for shakes.
Okay, so there was this time when I fell down the sofa. That was embarrassing, I had to wait for Kelsey to ring before Claira found me again. Oops.
And they say my predecessor got on the wrong side of the dog (y'know, the inside), but I don’t believe that. Reckon Cuddles the Bear made that up after my comment that he should be renames Muddles ‘cos he’s so old now (I mean, can you remember a time before cell phones? He can. Crazy isn’t it. They had this whole other world back then. Don’t know how they managed.).
Wakey-wakey. Oh bless, look at her. Someone went to sleep in her make-up again. We’re talking big panda eyes this morning. And look, she’s actually going to take a pic (get me; 8 megapixel camera, built in.). A phone’s job is never done.
That’s it, Claira, shove me in your dressing gown pocket. Thrust me into darkness why don’t you?
Ah well, at least I don’t have to listen to Amber whine today. Let's go get some breakfast.
(Just don't leave me on the table).
