Roosters Are Just a Type of Chicken
I once saw a billboard featuring a rooster in a denim jacket and sneakers. It said something like, "Who fathers children and doesn't stick around?" The answer is a chicken. It was supposed to suggest that it's not cool to have children and not raise them yourself. I don't think it worked. But I liked it.

It's still epidemic. It's cool for young guys, especially in poor districts, to get girls pregnant, and then move on to another girl. I've even met men in their 30's who are proud of having 5 or more children by different mothers. No, they don't support any of them financially.

We're still failing as a culture to teach minority youths the downside of having children without fathers in the home. We aren't getting across to the young men who deem it a sign of their virility or to the young women who see the welfare checks and food stamps and medicaid as a way up. They get respect and attention because they are mothers at 15. And Mom or Grandma will help babysit, so they can go out to their friends. Studies have shown that children suffer when a man is not in the home, to set an example and to give them love. Girls are more likely to have sex at an earlier age, and boys are more likely to act out and get in trouble without a father figure.

Even people coming from other countries, who are married, don't see the value of waiting until they can get bigger apartments or save some money or finish their education before having children. And they don't stop with one or two children. They just keep having them. These children will at least have a father present, but they will lack material things, and time spent with a mother who must work at least one job or more.

We don't want government involvement, but somehow we have to instill the value of waiting to have children, either through abstinence or the conscientious practice of birth control, and of limiting the number of children that one person, male or female, can have. A parent should have some ability to care for and provide for all of his children without resorting to taxpayer aide. That means if two is a stretch of the family budget, stop at two. Period. There's no excuse for breeding like rabbits these days. It only hurts the children and all of us as a society.
