"The Pizza Ploy" (Poetry/Day 21)

The Pizza Ploy

We sat there at the diner,
my lovely wife and I,
it was our weekly date night
when what should I espy?

The oven glowed with heat
as they slid the pizzas in
piled high with tempting goodies.
I had to wipe my chin.

“You’re paying more attention
to the food than to your wife!”
she said while staring at me
as she played with her knife.

After twenty years of marriage
I could tell the signs
of her dissatisfaction
by her deepening frown lines.

“Oh no, my dear,” I finally said,
“I think you misunderstand.”
I reached across the table
and gently took her hand.

“The pizza just reminded me
of how wonderful it been
to have these years with you,”
I said, flashing her a grin.

“This should be good,” she exclaimed
looking deep into my eyes.
“Tell me how you came to that
from watching pizza pies.”

“When we started life was like
an empty pizza crust.
We didn’t know where it would go
but we had each other’s trust.

Our love was like the sauce on top
as it spread over the years.
Sometimes thick and sometimes thin
through happiness and fears.

We were committed to each other,
that was the cheese that binds.
It bound us as if we were one
together in our minds.

Each year has been a topping
adding flavor to the mix.
I say this unequivocally.
This isn’t just a trick.”

She looked at me and I could tell
she found my words profound.
She squeezed my hand, stuck out her tongue
and made a farting sound.

“I’ve never heard such rubbish
but I appreciate you tried.”
I saw the twinkle in her eyes
as she continued on, “Besides,

I know how your mind works
so let’s eat and have some wine.
Just remember when we get home
the rest of the night is mine!"

What could she mean?
