Just lovely! Kinda sideways, but it reminded me of my old Buick that I inherited when my grandfather passed away. No gloves, but little remnants of his pipe tobacco everywhere. Completely different sentiment, I know, but the poem still too me there while it was also bringing me along with the poet. I love it when reading poetry is like that!

I love the line, "where his growth scared him."

I'm also glad to be introduced to more female poets. I feel like I'm not familiar with enough of them.

I stumbled on the same line. For me, it's because it wasn't the same voice as what I'd perceived up to that point.

Gorgeous poem, though.

I am loving this activity for getting me to articulate why the poems that stick with me do stick with me, but I'm not experiencing any surprises in my personal preferences...yet.

In his note today, Tony Gloeggler refers to the argument between Claudia Rankine and Tony Hoagland—I assumed everyone knows about it, but many people have asked, so …

Hoagland published this poem, "The Change," in 2003:

Race in America is an extremely complicated issue, of course, and so this small debate has generated much discussion among poets. Personally, it's one of those situations where I can see both sides of it—I think they're both right, though Rankine is more courteous in her rightness.

Anyway, if you were wondering, that's what Gloeggler was talking about after writing his own poem about the n-word.
