THE CHAPTER ONE COMPETITION
2016 QUILL AWARD NOMINEE

Banner Chapter One Competition

Why? Because we love WDC... And we want to promote the Novel Workshop.
When? September 1st through September 4th, 2016

**For those who have aready read THE RULES and Guidelines
and have got them securely embedded in their brains, *Laugh*,

WHAT'S THE CATCH?

There are two catches.
1. Your submission must be accompanied by 10,000 GPs which will be matched by us and donated to our favorite charity, "Invalid Item" . (That's a donation of 20,000 GPs for every submission!)
2. You must *randomly insert the phrase "Happy Birthday WDC" into the chapter anywhere you like. We will find it and mention it in your review. Goofy, I know, but there you have it. Failure to do this or to follow any of our simple rules will disqualify your entry. There can be no exceptions.


HOW DOES THIS WORK?

*Candy1* You title your post "Submission" and add your chapter to this forum in BITEM format, along with the 10,000 GP entry fee.
*Candy2* At least three authors from the Novel Workshop will read and review it.
*Candy4* If all rules are followed, your chapter advances to the judging phase.
*Candy1* Winners will be chosen and announced in approximately two weeks time.
*Candy2* Prizes and Awards will be distributed.
That's it! Easy-peasy!

*Cupcakep* Submit a bona-fide first chapter to a novel, novella, novelette as long as it has not been previously published.
*Cupcakeb* Submit an item that has been previously awarded for any reason. It should be updated and re-edited to clear up all known mistakes, errors, typos.
*Cupcakey* Submit an item in any genre or rating, from early childhood to erotica, as long as it is rated properly. Absolutely NO pornography.

*Cupcakeo* Submit poetry, short stories, memoirs, essays, technicals, blogs, biographies, or autobiographies.

RULES for SUBMISSION

Present and former Novel Workshop members are not eligible contestants, as that would be a conflict of interests.


*CandleP* Submissions may ONLY be entered between: SEPT. 1st-12:01a.m. WDC Time & SEPT. 4th-11:59p.m. WDC Time
                                                                                  to coincide with the week-long WDC Birthday Bash festivities.

*Candleg* No late entries will be considered.
*Candleb* You must include the 10,000 Submission Fee with your post. If you need help paying, click here. ▼
*Candleo* If there are four or less entries, only FIRST PRIZE ▼ will be awarded.
*Candleg* Your chapter may be submitted privately if you do not want it open to public readership.*
*Candlep* Items must be rated correctly. Word limit is 5,000 ▼ and a word count MUST be included.
*CandleB* Awarded items will be the best in the opinion of the judges, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the results.
*CandleR* Submit your chapters to this forum in BITEM format only. If you don't know how to do this, research it and learn ▼ .
*CandleG* BOOK ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. (Please create a static item for the purpose and duration of this contest.)
*CandleV* Multiple submissions are permitted. (Each submission will require its own 10k GP entry fee. ALSO, Each Submission must be in its own post. Please do not submit multiple Submissions in one post. )

*ExclaimR* All submissions WILL be judged on: Writing Skills & Craft: Opening sentence & paragraph, plot, character development, dialogue, spelling & punctuation, grammar, continuity, form, clarity, and hook. AND Creativity & Presentation: structure, figurative language & vocabulary and rhythm & meter. (If American English is not your first language, please give us a heads-up, so we don't penalize you unjustly for spelling and punctuation.)

Reviewing on submissions will begin immediately.
ONCE THE SUBMISSION IS POSTED, EDITS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.
ANY EDITS, no matter how trite, will disqualify the submission. Don't do it.
No exceptions can be made to this rule.

Writing Skills & Craft: Opening sentence & paragraph, plot, character development, dialogue,
spelling & punctuation, grammar, continuity, form, clarity, and hook.
Creativity & Presentation: structure, figurative language & vocabulary and rhythm & meter,

Every entry will receive at least one formal comprehensive review. Be warned: we do not produce fluff reviews in the Novel Workshop. If you cannot handle respectful criticism, do not submit your chapter.

At present, it will cost 930,000 GPS to fund a round of this contest. Donations would be greatly appreciated and will go toward funding prizes! Any donation above 50k will receive an MB of the donor's choice. (If no choice is mentioned, we will award a Fund Raising or Generosity MB.) The cost of the MB will be deducted from the donation.
