It's that subtle quality that allows a writer to guide us in how we're supposed to receive the story, without actually taking us by the hand or hitting us over the head with the theme. It presupposes that the author has a perspective and a stance, but those alone won't make a mature voice that works. It must be woven into the fabric of the narrative and inform the way the story itself relates to the separate elements that comprise it.
