for what it's worth -
E.E. Cummings was known to use something ripe,
once in awhile.
Occasionaly, I think it works, in the right piece, when what
you want is to illustrate exactly - the vulgarity and ugliness.
But I do agree - leaning on it like a crutch is just laziness.
