There is a difference, isn't there, between free verse and prose sentences with surprise! line breaks. It shouldn't be a total get out of jail free card; there ought to be some pattern, rhythm, shape. A pattern made by that writer, sure, but something anyhow.
I'm snarling here rather than get into an acrimonious email exchange - besides, having perpetrated freeverse myself, am on crumbly sort of high ground to be getting all prescriptive.
