Ok, a lot of questions here. Hopefully one or two answers can clear this up.

1) Yes, you can edit a book item after you post it, just as you can edit any item here after you post it.
2) Since this is not a publishing site, but is a peer-to-peer review site, there are no "rules" about how the entries look in the book. The goal of a book item is to simply collect a bunch of different chapters together.
3) I have not used the upload tool with books, but I would guess that having each chapter in an individual word file would be best. Someone with more experience with that would have to help you. I believe it's still in beta testing, so it might be buggy.
4) You can always copy and paste each entry into a book item if you don't want to mess with the conversion.
