To delete a page-full of email, you would
Click on Select All to tick all the selector boxes (or do it by hand)
Click on the trashcan icon.

To purge the Trash folder, you would click on
Purge Trash Folder
Confirm Purge



Depending on the size of the emails and which membership limit applies, deleting that many might not have been enough to change the number, which is given in tenths of a percent of the limit, which is in MBs.
