Editing an entry in a Book item does not change the Last Modified date of the Book item, so that would not have caused the Book item to show up in the New and Updated list.

Adding an entry to a Book item does change the Last Modified date of the Book item, so (as far as I know) that should have caused the Book item to show up in the New and Updated list. The latest item I see on the list is from 4 days ago.

Did you check that the new entry was successfully saved and that the last modified date of the Book item was changed to yesterday?
