If the original material is in the public domain, it is no longer under copyright protection.

The amount of time it takes after the creation or publication date for something to become public domain varies depending on the country, and you can google that. For the US, the copyright site is:
http://www.copyright.gov/

In the US, anything created/published before 1895 is currently in the public domain. Other works with a later publication date may or may not be in the public domain.
