Well, according to the site documentation, animated images aren't supported in photos or photo albums. Since some animated imaged don't upload to photos, and those that do upload appear flat on the photo album page, that would be true.

Since they apparently do work okay in the lightbox viewer window and when used elsewhere with a photo tag, those who stored them that way to use for signatures are not inconvenienced by what doesn't work.

Since animated photos are not a supported feature, either you would need to make do with whatever functionality happens to exist, or you would need to use the feature that is supported -- Image items.
