question about membership

If I want to give 6.months upgraded membership this month to someone who already has upgraded membership that expire in September 2017. will I just extend the one he currently has or I will cut his with mine and, instead of expiring the next year he would have to buy another one again when mine expire? Hope you understand. Thanks.
