After I posted my question, I did a few searches on google, but didn't find what I was looking for. I don't need a "you need to do this" guide, but rather something that shows me some concrete examples.
I realize that it is somewhat out of vogue to use Mark Twain's style in today's prose, but there was a reason it was popular then (and now). It reached people, and the personalities he created stuck with readers forever.
