Open Office allows you to save as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (doc) which is, as labeled, completely integral to MS Word. I prefer this option. It allows me to work on files at work and at home.
Open Office Writer will default to saving files in its format .odt, so get into the habit of using the Save as Type drop down list. Unfortunately, OO's MS Word 2003 equivalent saves as .xml as opposed to .docx.
You may want to switch to Libre Office. Many bloggers swear that they are making better choices then Open Office. I plan to do my own evaluation soon.
