That's correct, there's only standard welcome when you add someone to the group. However, you can write welcome letter in a static item and keep it in your portfolio. Then, when you add someone to the group, just copy/paste text from the static item into email and send it to a person who you added.

I hope this helps because I've seen the others do it this way.
