Non-victory!
what to do once you've lost

My last newsletter covered what things you can do once you've won a contest. I thought it made sense to cover what to do if you lose, too.

Losing is a part of life that we must accept. There can only be one winner (and some runners-up), so odds are we're all going to lose at one point. So here are some things you should do (and some you shouldn't) when you lose:

*Bullet* Learn! Every loss is an opportunity to grow. Take advice from the judge(s), fellow contestants and other Writing.Com members. We all have room to grow as writers!

*Bullet* Thanks! A contest is a great opportunity regardless of whether you win or lose. Don't forget to thank the contest host, judges, etc. Even thank the other participants! It's competition that spurs us on to be better! A great way to thank WDC members is to review them!

*Bullet* Congrats! Congratulate the winners. It's only polite!

*Bullet* Don't Question! If you disagree with the judge's decision, it's not your place to question it. The choice of winners is the decision and opinion of the judge. Questioning their judgment is not a good idea and most likely will not result in a change in their ruling.

Honestly, when you enter a contest, you're already a winner. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. Each time you take the chance to write something new and submit it to a contest, you've already won. As a member of a peer-to-peer writing site, you've already won. So, choose a contest from my picks below, or find a contest on your own. Once you've entered, you've won! *Smile*

Always keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (July 11, 2012)), discussed what to do once you've won a contest.

Great advice! Now, all I have to do is write a winning story.
And ... if your next NL is before August 15th, will you plug my raffle/auction?

Sure thing! I've linked it above, and here it is again: "Invalid Item

Thank you for the good advice and also thanks for including my c~note shop in the activity as well.
I'm honored to find my name in the newsletter! Thanks again.

You're welcome! *Smile*

Congrats on passing your online course and best of luck with the rest of your journey to a new career!! When I win a contest, I always update the item when I'm revising it, to include a line that it took first place in the linked contest (I always link the contest at the bottom of the item, at the time I submit the entry). I think the publicity for the contest is a good way to thank the person or group that runs it, while hopefully drawing participants to future rounds. ~ NickiD89

I totally agree! *Smile*

When I win, I usually post a message in my notebook about winning or post a message in scroll. I don't think that we should brag too much, in order to make the other people who entered feel that they are not any good. I feel like I'm a winner for just entering contests and writing a short story or a poem, but that may just be me. I usually go and edit it after. Honestly, you've covered just about everything. You're so smart. *Pthb*
Love your newsletter and thanks for including those two of my items.
