Letter from the editor

Auctions are something that happen on this site nearly every day and there can always be more than one running at a time. These are places where people collect donations and then auction them off for Gift Points that typically go toward one or more groups when the auction is over. They are a great way to raise funds for groups but to do that, you have to know how to create one!

Years ago, I created "Invalid Item which details how to set up, run, and close an auction. The item goes more in-depth than this newsletter will so if you're more interested, check that out.

The first thing you need to do to create an auction is have an idea for one. The best auctions have some sort of theme that draws attention from the members of WDC.

Next, you need a Message Forum created where you can list all of the donations, allow members to bid and send gift points with posts in the fourm. These are the most preferred type of item for an auction because they allow all of those things and you can keep a running tab of bids along with time stamps to know who has bid most recently on any given donation.

After that, you need to set up the rules for the auction including when it will run, how long are you taking donations, if there are any set bid increases (such as by 1,000 GPs). Then decide who will benefit from the auction. Will some of the winnings go toward your membership or will they all go to charity groups?

Finally, set up a Group item where Gift Points can be sent, such as donations and when the auction is over. This will help keep them separate from your own so that you can more easily distribute them to those you chose to benefit from your auction. Those are just a few quick tips on how to get started making your own auction. Here is a short checklist of these and some questions to ask when you're setting one up for yourself:

*Starr* Set up the rules for bidding.

*Staro* Decide who will benefit from your auction.

*Star* When is your auction going to run and have you clearly shown those in the auction?

*Starg* Do you have a place set up to keep the Gift Points?

*Starb* Have you clearly marked all of the donations so members know what they can bid on?

*Starv* Enjoy running the auction and use it as a way to connect to more members of the WDC community!

So remember that auctions can be fun but they are a bit of work to run. Hopefully this helps you get started with your own auction! *Bigsmile*

Ask & Answer

My question for you this time: Have you ever run your own auction? If you have, do you have any tips? If you haven't, do you want to run your own in the future?

Question from before ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (August 26, 2015)): What do you most enjoy about WDC's birthday celebrations?

No one answered this question so here's my own for you! *Bigsmile* I most enjoy seeing the diversity that the community can come up with and all of the ideas that fly around during those birthday celebrations. Seeing what members can come up with in terms of new contests or activities, or even if they're running an old activity that's exclusive to that week, it's great to see everyone show up for a good time!
