A popular romance subgenre is the Regency Period. What makes it so popular with romance readers?

Regency readers expect a lot from this subgenre. For one, regency covers are some of the most visually stunning covers in romance. The story usually has attendance at Almacks for the debutantes, and rakes who are reformed by love. Let's not forget elegance and etiquette. There's a ball in the story and maybe even a duel. There's low morals, and high fashion. So what's the appeal of this type of story?
The Regency period is considered from 1811 to 1820, during the time when George Augustus Fredrick was the heir to George III. George III was considered insane and his son, who would become George IV, became the regent. The Regency era is considered to be from 1783 to 1820. In 1783, George IV was 21, a young, glamorous, and elegant heir. The people called him "Prinny."
Truly, be it the Regency period or the Regency era, George IV defines this often-written about romantic time period. So what was the era and George IV like?
George IV was born in 1762 and was 21 in 1783. As a young man, he was slim, glamourous, elegant, and extravagant. George IV was everything his parents weren't. He was known as the "1st Gentleman of England." George could carry on a witty conversation and his manners were highly polished. He was a patron of the arts, music, theatre, and architecture. Soon, the other side came out. His extravagance led to many debts. He gambled a lot. He enjoyed drinking. And he was known to have a lot of affairs. During the regency era, Jane Austen was published. Art, poetry, music, and theatre all flourished.
As regent, George IV, was nothing like his younger self. He was rather fat and spent much more than he earned. He was rude and his polished manners had fallen by the wayside. He treated his wife with total disdain. While most regency romances are written during 1811-1820, they embody the morals set earlier when George IV was young.
Should you desire to write a regency keep in mind some of the following elements:
Debutantes debut at Almacks
There's a ball
There's a duel
There's elegance and extravagance.
There's low morals and high fashion.
There's rakes reformed by love.
There's polished manners and witty conversation.
Challenge write a flash fiction, 1000 words or less on one element of the regency era.

Romance/Love is one of my favorite genres of all times. I love reading about a variety of couples come together in different ways, in different backgrounds. My favorite sub genres include Historical and Contemporary (first) and then Supernatural and Erotica (but I'm very picky in these two).
Well I don't have a particular romance novel as my favorite. I like any which has conflict, sensuality and a happy ending.
Those are the elements that appeal to me as a romance reader myself. I enjoy a good historical and one of my favorites is author Shana Galen.

You asked which romantic sub-genre is our favorite? I honestly don't know how to choose.
I go through phases. For a long time it was historical, either Scottish medieval or English
Regency, but then I got sucked into contemporary, paranormal and military. Right now
I'm reading a lot of m/m (which is a subgenre you didn't mention but definitely growing
in popularity). I don't think I've got a favorite overall. I am just delighted that I can stay
within the romance genre (with the implied happy endings) and read a little bit of
everything. Even sci fi!
Thanks for sharing. I've read Scottish medieval and English Regency, which I both
enjoy. I like contemporary, but I'm picky about my paranormal and military.

My all time favorite Historical Romance is Shanna by Katherine Woodiweiss.
This book had conflict galore, sex, suspense and mystery. What more could you want?
I love Jayne Ann Krentz early paranormal books. Great Story teller!
