Since she died in 2006,
I've been wondering where my Mom is now.
I believe in reincarnation,
so I think she's probably back on Earth.
This has led to some imagining, among my friends and me.
I'm thinking it has the potential for a fantasy tale. |

Dear Reader,
My mother passed away in December, 2006. She died without much suffering, of a cardiac arrest. It must've been an hour or so between when she said she's feeling uncomfortable, to when the Doctor told us there was no heartbeat and no pulse.
One of my friends said, "She must've done good in her many past lives, to get a peaceful end like this in this life." I guess so. And then, I started wondering, where is she now?
We believe in reincarnation, so I'm guessing she's back on Earth. She's probably somewhere between seven and nine years old.
Sometimes, I think she must be living in Europe someplace. She always wanted to visit Europe and didn't, in this lifetime. Since I knew her as female, I'm guessing she's a girl, even in her new life. Think of the exciting possibilities for a fantasy writer, to create two characters! What if I go in search of my Mom ... how would I even start? Narrow it down? Approach someone? The mind reels ...
Another thought I hug to myself is that she is now a student in the school where she was once Principal. So, she sees her own photo on the wall in the library, attends a quiz in her own memory on her own past-life birthday every year, and learns from the syllabus she once helped create, on the campus she once helped design. It's fascinating to think of it. Does she know she's her? Exciting possibilities for a story-writer, either way.
And she loved reading detective stories, so maybe she'll grow up to be a detective ... ? Hmmmm.
The other possibility is that she isn't a human being, but an animal. Some consider that a 'demotion' of sorts, but I think Mom would have been quite happy to be someone's pet puppy. If so, she'd be called MAX. She wanted to name a dog MAX. I didn't like the name much myself and i argued with her about it, when we were considering getting a dog. I wanted Snoopy.So any dog named Max or Snoopy ... well ...
I hope I'm not sounding irreverent here. I certainly don't mean to be. I love my Mom's memory and it is sacred to me. It's just that I think my spiritual beliefs and my imagination as a writer can combine to create some unusual fantasy!

I fully agree with your comments about emotional connections with the characters. I think it is also about enabling the readers to connect better with the stories that we create these emotional developments in the story, especially when there is an "underdog" we can root for.abcoachnz-Sometimes around 
Didn't realise true importance of emotional attachment to characters until this week - currently dragging myself through a mystery novel where I don't care what happens to who. Noticed absence of three senses in descriptions, too - just getting sight and some sounds. Learning loads about how to improve my own writing. Catherine Hall |
