The Love for the Places We Call Home
What is a home to you? To me, it goes beyond where you live. A home is made up of the people, places, and things that make you feel comfortable in your everyday life. I don't consider the town in which I was raised "home" anymore, because I associate negative feelings with it. My parents are still there, but my relationship with them is currently not the same as it once was, either. I have some great memories there from high school and college, but I also left that place for a reason. I've made a new "home" for myself as an adult in another city. However, I don't consider myself to only have one home.
At one point, I had a "second home" in a different city with my ex's family. They treated me so well, better than some of my own family. That "home" was a feeling more than a place. Now, I have a second home at my workplace. I know it sounds weird, but I have met some of my closest friends through work. They create an environment of support for me when I'm feeling especially frustrated (which, let's face it, happens more than we teachers care to admit!) I also have the small home I've made with my boyfriend and cat in our apartment, in the city I've lived in for ten years. It's the place I go to at the end of the day, where I'm in charge of what I eat, when I sleep, and what I do. It's my "grown up" home.
How do we show our love for the places we call home? One of the easiest ways is to take care of it. I'm a bit of a neat freak; I get very OCD when things are out of order in our apartment. To me, taking care of where you live, and the people who live in it, shows that you care about it. There are so many ways that we can express our appreciation for the people in our lives, and most of them don't have to cost a lot at all!
We can also show our love of our communities by voting and becoming a voice for change in them. Praise the positive, and help change the negative! Many of us take it for granted that our communities are safe and happy, but the truth is, they wouldn't be that way if many people didn't make time to lend a helping hand.
A personal note:
Since 2002, I've called Writing.com my home away from home. It's not just a social media site to me; it's a community, with all of the perks of a community: friendly neighbors that will help you out when you have problems, community leaders who do their best to make the place safe, and resources to make your stay more enjoyable. For the past seven years, I've been one of those "leaders," a blue-cased mod who was willing to flash her badge whenever necessary, upholding the WDC rules and regulations. It was a position I had yearned for so long that I never thought it was going to come. When I finally received my promotion, I was so excited and so proud.
However, times change. I haven't been around the site a lot, or even writing much (although I always have intentions to!). Life has gotten in my way recently. I've been debating for months about dropping my hard-earned mod status, for various reasons. It's really hard for me to say good-bye to my blue case. I keep wondering "What if I want it back?" That being said, I've decided that this will be my last official site newsletter. I've loved so many moments of it, but my duties here are done. It's time for me to go back to being an average citizen, only responsible for herself and her immediate family unit (the groups I'm still a leader of.) It's been fun and an honor to be a blue case! |
