The Spirituality of Work
From a secular perspective, work is the effort we invest in surviving and thriving in the world; the effort we put into obtaining what we need and want - the acquisition of food, shelter, etc. It is the accumulation of security and comfort. Our work is exchanged in the complex economics of trading goods and services; my talent, knowledge and possessions for yours. It might or might not be competitive, but it is focused mostly on one’s own well-being.
From a spiritual perspective, however, work becomes more about cooperation. As our circle of concern expands and we come to care about the well-being of others; my good and yours are mutually inclusive – they are interdependent. We can accomplish infinitely more with teamwork than we could expect to accomplish alone.
A few weeks ago we had most of the roofing on our church replaced. The company who did the work was impressive - a swarm of workers divided up the labor with skill and efficiency, completing the entire project in one day. I try to imagine how long it would have taken one person to do that much work, and I have no doubt that the company is much more profitable (both for the owner and for each individual) as they work together than it would be if they were all working alone, competing for business instead of combining resources. Working together is almost always the most effective strategy.
Such an attitude about work and the community in which we exchange it requires spiritual perspective. Consider the story about three masons at a construction site, lined up at a wall of a new building. A passerby asks each what they’re doing and they answer in turn.
The first says, “What does it look like – I’m laying bricks.”
The second says, “I’m earning a living.”
The third responds, “I’m building a cathedral.”
Obviously, though all three were manipulating bricks and mortar, each of those laborers was doing different work. No matter what work we do, it's all about perspective.
