Angel meets Xavier. Her life is going to be changed alot now.
The Schmidts lived in an urban nieghborhood by a park and a swimming pool. Their house was a blue two-story with white trimmings on the porch and a little yard big enough for a game of kickball. They had an Austrailian Shepard dog.
Eric stepped out of his dark blue Jetta and opened my door.
"Angel, you're home now." His hand was on my back, trying to push me towards the house.
I still had unsure feelings about the entire thing.
"Do I have to go in?"
"Yes, you have to. Or you'll be in trouble with the courts."
The courts. Damn. The courts were not my friends.
"The courts can go to hell but I'm not so." I began to walk towards the Schmidts house.
"And one more thing, Angel, be a good girl." He laughed and winked at me.
I winked back at him. "Dont worry Eric. When have I been a bad girl?"
"I'll call to check in on you every once and a while to see how you're doing. Just answer your phone when I do."
"Ok, bye Eric."
"Bye Angel."
I walked into my new home without one more look back from Eric.
I pushed open the white oak front door. I walked into the hallway. In the living room was a muscular looking white guy with black hair covering his face and pretty green eyes staring at the computer.
"Hey." He spoke.
"Yeah, hi, um, Im..."
"You're Angel. I know. Your brothers, Dan and Kerry, they got here like twenty minutes ago. Bob and Mary, they're in the dining room."
"Angel, you're here." Mary Ann called when she heard the boy say that I was there.
"Yep, I'm here. Where do I put my bags and stuff?"
A tall. skinny tannish girl with long wavy brown haiir and crystal blue eyes came down the stairs right on queue. "Ah, you must be Angel. I'm Maria. I'll help you with your stuff."
So this was Maria. She seems so nice and polite and collected. I'm sure that'll change.
"Ok." I followed her up to the second floor of the house.
Our room was a small creame colored plain room with no posters and a plain dark brown oak desk with a computer.
"So, what do you think?" Maria asked.
"It's nice. A little plain but still nice anyways."
I put my suitcase on my white sheeted bed.
"Yeah, well, what did you expect? A repeat of home? No, we have 7 other kids in this house. My mom and dad dont have enough money to trick out everybodys room. Get over it. You're lucky you arent outside on the porch, where you would have been."
Oops, I was wrong. Maria isnt what I thought she was. I could tell from right now that the relationship between Maria and I wasnt going to be good.
"Well Im glad I get to sleep in a bed inside the house." I turned and walked down to the living room.
That boy from when I first got there was still down on the couch with his hair the same way. Even the channel was the same. I thought that maybe he wasnt actually watching tv. Maybe he was watching me. Yet his eyes never left the screem. Infact, he didnt even look at me. He didnt notice it when I sat down next to him.
"What's your name?"
"Its Xavier but I go by X. So call me X."
"Ok X. Im guessing that youre the adopted child."
"Well you guessed right. And let me tell you something. Im not like these people. Theyre spoiled little brats. Trust me, Im not like them."
He looked me dead in the eyes. I could tell he wasnt joking. I could only nod to agree. I was speechless.
"C'mon, Angel. Lets go take a walk." X got up and I only followed. "You seem like a badass."
"Hmm... Why do you say that, X?" I was intrigued by X.
"YOu just dont seem like these people or your brothers. Your brothers seem like cool, calm collected average joes. But you, you are a spitfire. I heard how you talked to MAria."
I felt a little bad. I wasnt a spitfire. I was really scared of what was going to happen to me. But X, he didnt need to know that. Yet.
"Yeah, well, maybe I am. What are you then?"
"Me? I'm a mystery. You gotta figure me out." He smiled than turned around and ran into a clearing in the forest.
Figure me out? I thougt. This X boy is one crazy dude.
But I followed him anyway. I searched through the woods to find the right clearing X went into. It was hard because there were two clearings. One clearing had green grass and was surrounded by bushes and logs were scattered all over the ground. There were tree stumps too. The other, on the left, had no grass, just dirt. There were no logs scattered all over the clearing, just one single log surrounded by the tall trees,
There was a rustling for a minute then it was gone.
"Hey there." X popped out from behind a big tree in the dirt clearing. He put his hands on his shoulders and it made me jumped. "Hehe, sorry about that. You ok?"
"Yeah, yeah, Im fine. So is this part of your mystery? A dirt clearing?"
"Nope, its just a hang out. I had one like it back home, before I was adopted.
"Do you miss your parents?"
"Not too much. My mother, oh, she was a real wreck and was always bitchy with my dad and me. And my father, he was an alcholic. The two of them couldnt handle a child."
"Did you love your parents?"
"Ofcourse, I still do love my mom and dad. I just couldnt live with them. I couldnt live with the way they lived and how they treated me as a son. Why are you here?"
"My parents do drugs so the courts decided to put us in foster care since none of our closet relatives could take us."
"Ah, thats horrible but hey, can I tell you something?"
"Sure."
"I want us to be close. I want you to be my partner. I feel like you understand me. And Im not usually home. You've never been around here, have you?"
"Nope."
"I know the hot spots around here. I know lots of the right people around here."
"The 'right' kind of people? Who would that be?"
"You know, the punks, the skaters, the punkrockers. They're all clean. That's what I meant. They're clean kids, good kids."
"Oh so, youre 'Mr. Community'?"
"I would not say 'Mr. Community'. The punks, and skaters and punkrockers, they arent too common around here. And most of them drink and do drugs anyways. Lots of higher middle class sonbs live around here."
"I see, so what do you think of me and my chances of being at home?" I swollowed on the word 'home.'
"I think you could go a week without a confrontation. But I like that. I havent met anyone like you."
"Oh come on. Only a week? Im not that bad."
"We'll see." X got up to leave the dirt clearing. I followed him home.
