Summary of this Book...
This book is the 3rd volume in a 5 volume series about the life or Ernest Hemingway. This particular book deals with the time when Ernest was breaking away from his first wife (Hadley Richardson Hemingway) and marrying his 2nd wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. He was also starting to have some literary success as the novel, The Sun Also Rises was getting published and would make him a world renown author.

After living in Paris and traveling Europe for most of the 1920's, he and Pauline embark on a trip back to the United States, with no firm idea on where they will settle. Her family resides in Piggot Arkansas, which is not an option as far as Ernest is concerned.

The birth of their son, Patrick, (Ernest's second of 3 sons) also figures promimently as they try to find their way. That birth is followed closely by the death by suicide of Ernest's father, the troubled Clarence Hemingway.

When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read the next in the series and I will do that.
This Book made me feel...
sad. It made me feel like Ernest already knew he lost something he would never regain.
The author of this Book...
does a pretty good job although at times he tends to weigh in with judgmental stuff that it would be better to let the reader figure out for herself or himself.
I recommend this Book because...
if you want to know about Ernest Hemingway's life, this 5 volume set is a great place to start.
Further Comments...
I am not sure I agree with all of the author's assertions, but he does back up his thoughts with facts and examples. I will definitely give him that. So far, I think I prefer Carlos Baker's biography over this one, but I will have to re-read that one - it's been a very long time since I read it.
