Summary of this Book...
After reading "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt, "The Goldfinch" was a huge disappointment. It was difficult to believe Tartt wrote both books.

The "Gold Finch" opens with a (literally) explosive scene that had me transfixed. A young boy is caught in an explosion while visiting an art museum with his mother. The main character, Theo, is prompted by an elderly gentleman to leave the scene with a famous painting, The Goldfinch. Theo has ample opportunity to return the artwork, but developed sort of an obsession for it. He's taken in by a well-to-do family, and that works for awhile.

Once Theo's father comes on scene and takes him back to live with him, the story spirals downward into the ravings of a kid addicted to drugs.

Why this book, rather than "The Secret History" was awarded The Pulitzer Prize for fiction is a mystery.

The writing is inelegant and at times clumsy. The story left me feeling depressed and angry that I wasted time finishing the book, while hoping for redemption.
I especially liked...
One of my favorite parts was the time Theo spent helping an elderly gentleman in an antique store. The bond seemed tight, but eventually the reader becomes aware that Theo, even here, is a truly flawed character, without an upside.
The n/a of this Book...

Further Comments...
This book received mixed reviews, and I come down on the side of "save your money" or buy "The Secret History" instead.
