The is a beautifully written novel with echoes of Lord of the Flies. A young, orphaned musical prodigy goes to summer camp where the other boys do not accept him. He is the ultimate outsider. The other boys begin with small pranks that escalate into ruthless treatment. Leo (the bullied child) is an incredible character with amazing depth.

A warning to horror fans: This novel masquerades as horror, but it is not a horror book. This is semi-dark literary fiction.
I especially liked...
Tryon created an awe-inspiring sense of dread in this novel. The protagonist is the ultimate sympathetic character: an orphaned artist who is both physically and emotionally fragile. That said, the end was satisfying. And of course, I always adore Tryon's writing.

Thomas Tryon also wrote my favorite novel of all time: The Other. I am a huge fan of his writing style.
