Summary of this DVD...
This is the final season of Downton Abbey. It was released on Tuesday, we got it on Wednesday and watched the whole thing that day.

We are big fans of Downton and we enjoyed this season, probably more than the last two.

That said, I had a big problem with what went on with Lady Mary in this season. I just didn't buy her being in love with the car guy, Henry. After the show spent so long developing her relationship with Matthew, this one with Henry seemed really rushed and phoney.

Putting all that aside, I liked just about everything else this season. At first I was a bit put off by the absence of Allan Leech, who left at the end of season 5. To me, the character of Tom Branson is pivotal to the whole show because he is really the only character to provide a bridge between the upstairs and downstairs characters.

But, to my delight and surprise, he returns about a third of the way through. He returns to Downton for good and not a minute too soon. His presence was sorely missed in the first few episodes.

I felt like who cares about any of this until he appeared on the scene at Carson and Mrs. Hughes wedding.

I have to say I am not a big fan of Carson marrying Mrs. Hughes, but I was glad for an excuse to bring Tom Branson back to the fold.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who wants to see things wrapped up for the family in a relatively happy way.
I especially liked...
Tom Branson. I would have liked to see him and Mary develop something, but that was not to be.
I didn't like...
the grotesque thing that happens at the dinner table with Robert about half way through the season. It was shocking and scary. My own father died of a sudden thing so this was probably more upseting to me because of my own personal baggage.
The cast of this DVD...
is wonderful. It isn't that I don't like Matthew Goode. I liked him fine on The Good Wife. I just don't think he's a match for Lady Mary. I thought that guy who played Charles Blake was more of a wise guy counterpart to her snottiness. In my opinion, the character of Lady Mary needs a very strong, funny sort of guy and Matthew Goode is too quiet and needy for Mary. He reminded me too much of Tony Guillingham.
I recommend this DVD because...
if you watched the first five seasons and hung in there for the sadness, it is a nice reward to see most of the characters pretty happy for once. I wanted more with Mrs. Pattmore and Mr. Mason, but you can't have everything.
Further Comments...
This is the final season of one of my favorite shows of all times. The first three seasons were the best, in my opinion, but this was better than Season 4 and 5.

At the ending, I was relieved and smiling that no one was sacrificed to the drama of this season. Mr. Fellowes did a fine job of wrapping things up and I (for the most past) enjoyed watching it and look forward to watching it all over again.
