Summary of this Book...
This is the biography of the 30th President. He grew up in Vermont and went on to be Governor of Massachusetts. He gained fame by intervening in a police strike and firing all the striking workers, saying public safety workers never have the right to put the public in danger by striking.

He stood by what he thought was right in the strike and because of that became Vice President under President Harding.

President Harding died amid his teapot dome scandal swirling around. He died of an upset stomach and there were rumors about his death.

Coolidge ascended to the presidency and in the next election, won it outright.

He was a fiscal conservative, who believed in a balanced budget. He worked hard and was a visionary, encouraging air flight (Wright Brothers & Lindbergh) and working to establish Mount Rushmore's Memorial. He declined being depicted there himself.

The most interesting thing about his presidency to me, was the tragedy of his son, Calvin Coolidge, Jr. The boy played tennis on the White House lawn one day in June. He got a blister on his middle toe, and within a week was dead from sepsis/blood poisoning. He was only 16 years old.

After this, Coolidge didn't run for another term. Hoover becamse President and the Great Depression swept the nation. Coolidge died from a heart attack in January of 1933, before Roosevelt was innaugurated.

There is speculation that Hoover worsened the Depression with his knee jerk reactions to things and that Coolidge would have been much better for the country.

I guess we will never know. He did a great thing encouraging air flight at a time when it was just starting out.

The book was boring sometimes, but interesting too. I am glad I read it and learned about the President that Reagan admired most. He certainly seems to be more admirable than the people who hold the office in modern times.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone who wants to learn more about President Coolidge and the history of the early 1920's.
