Summary of this Book...
In “A Doll's House” Nora breaks away from her role of wife and mother imposed on her by society. In the 19th century, society frowned upon women asserting themselves; which Nora does at the end of the play by abandoning her husband and children for total independence, to find her true self and be able to understand the world. The role of women (imposed by society) was: to support their husbands by raising and educating the children, while converting the home into a comfortable abode for all members of the family. All decisions, especially those concerning finances were left to the males, the breadwinners. This is an excerpt of my essay for a University literature class.
This type of Book is good for...
understanding the condition of women at the turn of the century and the resulting women's liberation movement that sprung from this play.
I especially liked...
how the woman takes out money from the bank to take vacation with her family that saved her husband's life.
I didn't like...
her refusal to explain her behavior to her husband who thinks she had an affair and used the money for that.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read more about women's liberation movement in Europe.
This Book made me feel...
sad but also more knowledgeable about women and their condition at the turn of the century in Europe.
The author of this Book...
was an influential reformer in Europe.
I recommend this Book because...
is important to understand women's liberation.
I don't recommend this Book because...
it is a very sad and tragic story.
