Summary of this Book...
Christine is about an odd relationship a young high school ‘nerd’ has with a 1958 red Plymouth Fury. Arnie Cunningham, who along with his best friend, Dennis Guilder, just happen to find the old beaten up car in somebody’s yard, and for Arnie, it’s love at first sight. He sees potential in the car and vows to restore it to its original condition. But Christine isn’t an average car; she’s possessed by her original owner, Roland LeBay, a vicious, cruel SOB who gradually begins to possess Arnie himself. And Christine has supernatural powers, able to repair herself no matter how much damage she suffers, including those at the hands of some of Arnie’s high school tornmentors.
And Christine doesn’t care much for abuse, and revenge comes quickly for those that cross her, even for just saying mean things about her. Dennis and Leigh Cabot, a girl Arnie is emanored with, see his obsession and try to bring him ‘back to real life’.
But are they too late?
This type of Book is good for...
A two or three day literary romp through the world of the supernatural.
I especially liked...
King’s descriptions of how vengeful Christine (a.k.a. Roland LeBay) can be.
I didn't like...
As a huge fan of Stephen King, this is the one book of his that I was a little disappointed with. It wasn’t the writing or the telling of the story, but the supernatural aspect of a car being able to come to life and repair itself, no matter how damage it sustains.
This Book made me feel...
somewhat nostalgic and sentimental. Although I wasn’t ‘of age’ during the late 50’s and early 60’s, I do have an appreciation for that generation’s music, and King starts off every chapter with a quote from a classic rock and roll song during that era.
The author of this Book...
is known as the modern Master of Horror, and rightly so. He’s received numerous literary awards, too many mention here.
I recommend this Book because...
although it didn’t quite suit my tastes, it nevertheless was written by a very gifted writer, and it very well might appeal to other King fans.
Further Comments...
Christine was published in 1983 and released as a 111 minute motion picture by Columbia Pictures just in time for Christmas of that same year. It was marketed as ‘John Carpenter’s Christine’, who directed it. The film remained relatively faithful to the novel, but possibly because of the awkward billing, it met with mediocre reviews and unimpressive box office receipts.
