| January 8, 2013: What is your favorite book from childhood? The first I remember reading, and have never forgotten, were Andre Norton’s wonderful “Lord of Thunder,” a science fiction, and Rosemary du Jardin’s novels for young adolescents, what would be YA, but much more innocent than today’s books. Both my parents were readers and kept a lot of paperbacks and hardcovers in the household, plus my mother and I read Library books often. I enjoyed science fiction and dystopian; I was young when I read “A Canticle for Leibowitz.” Of course, my addiction to horror also started at a young age. |
Today's Short Story Challenge: "The Message"  January 7, 2013: Are you a dog person, a cat person, or "other"? Both. I never got a pet till I was 21.5 and a married; there’s been mostly dogs, but also cats. I had Rufus for 27 months, March 2002 to Aug. 3 2004, then he was taken from me; we moved from GA to FL, all over Fl, to Spokane, then to Spokane Valley. Not another pet until Pookah (pronounced Pokey) literally adopted me in early July 2010: crossed the busy street in front of the house, moved down the side yard, came in the back door, curled up for 2 days on a blanket in the back foyer under the table near the laundry nook; then moved into my room (on his own design). Has been with me since. Bit-Bit (formerly Little Bit) was given to two of the grandsons for birthdays in May 2010, but adopted me and has lived in my room for I guess, a couple of years. Rufus, Pookah, and Bit-Bit (and our Black Lab, Bear/aka Tarball/aka Black Gator/aka Silas) are of course canines. (or four-legged humans) |
| Today's Short Story Challenge: "Watch What You Wish For,Lest It ComeTrue" January 5, 2013: If you could wake up tomorrow and find that one thing had changed about the world, what would you have that one thing be? I know I should say world peace and goodwill, and I would love to wake up to that! But this one will be a very personal and selfish change: I would go back to September 8, 1964, and act out of my higher self and better nature and not out of my fears. And that would have changed two lives for the better. |
| Today's Short Story Challenge entry: "Final Snowfall" . Not a Short Story after all, heading for novella, and as yet incomplete.January 4, 2013: What are your New Year's Resolutions? I seldom make any, but this year, during the last couple weeks of December, I began listing a “2013 Personal Reading Challenge.” That assumes I can read for myself this year; in August and September I didn’t at all, because of the overwhelming Review Matterhorn. Right now it’s at 30 items: authors, series, individual books. Many of that is “all of the author,” “all of the series.” The first is Anna Karenina, which I began in November and loved-but didn’t finish BECAUSE OF REVIEWING. I’m also doing the 2013 Eclectic Reader Challenge, the 2013 Dustbuster Challenge, and one just for myself: 2013 authors-new-to-me. Even better perhaps, I AM WRITING AGAIN! I’ve scarcely left the house in almost seven years, and I shop online; so I don’t know if this applies to me. Waiting at a doctor’s office? Waiting for package delivery? | December 31, 2012: Looking back over the past year, what do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment of the year? The accomplishment which seems to be having the most enduring effect is joining Goodreads Jan. 1, 2012, which led to me reviewing every book I read, which led to the creation of my review blog in March 2012, which resulted in the Review Matterhorn, which may be emptied by 2016. |
