Reading, Writing, Pondering: Big Life Themes, Literature, Contemporary/Historical Issues
Blog City image small

Welcome to the 14th century, in a farflung outpost of the Holy Roman Empire, and a new Convent outpost of the terrrifically powerful Roman Catholic Church. Sound historically dull? Hopefully not so--for this is NOT an ordinary 14th Century Convent.

Back after a six-year hiatus....

From NaNoWriMo historical Supernatural novels in Scotland, Michigan, South Alabama and historical horror in Standwood Station, GA-to the Phantom Northern Woods-to singlehandedly refighting the American Civil War-to exploring Social Justice and standing for First Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution-we deal out horror, Supernatural, Historical, fantasy, mystery, and more. We do not fear outspokeness.
And always, always, always, We Do History.
Find it here.

We write it. We read it. We hold strong opinions. We orate.

Meanwhile, whether we're writing or just reading, we love to rave about books and authors right here!

DAY 41 - DECEMBER 29 PROMPT: Over the course of your life, what has been the strangest/oddest experience you've ever had?

Strange, odd, or terrifying? I’ve experienced all of them, all my life. The worst occurred in late November 2009, and I really don’t want to go into detail (I don’t even want to remember it). An evening chimney fire the day after Thanksgiving resulted in smoke and water damage, and we had to move out of the older house (probably mid-20th century) in which we lived. Fortunately we found a house quickly, and were able to move Dec. 7-8. My daughter, son-in-law, and then five grandkids stayed in a motel; I, and my younger adult son, lived in separate quarters (2) on the property. I had been experiencing serious mischief in that house since September 2007, but on the Sunday night after Thanksgiving I went into the house after dark to use the restroom (no electricity), and what I experienced caused me to run out the back door and refuse to return until my son went inside and set up a lantern/flashlight so I could get in and out without crossing through the middle room in the darkness. And that’s all the detail I’ll add.

Were you miraculously granted complete power to change for the better one aspect of any person or thing in the world, what would you change and why?

When I first read this, an evil Emperor Ming chuckle issued, as I thought of all the individuals, organisations, governments, mind-sets I could change. But that would be the height of hubris, and interfering with both free will and the Deity’s plan. So instead I would ask to change only myself. There are several foundational beliefs which have stalled my life that I would change, if only I had the strength.

What are your thoughts/ beliefs about U.F.O.'s and whether or not intelligent life exists on other planets?

I BELIEVE!

I have always believed. I find it the height of human hubris to think that the Deity made only humans, and nothing else. Certainly we are not the height of evolution, either. Given wars, crime, and greed, obviously humans have failed to reach perfection. I fully believe in the existence of extraterrestrial sentience. Why any advanced civilization would take an interest in us, I don’t know, unless it’s checking to make sure the Sun isn’t going supernova and destroying an entire section of the Multiverse; or making sure humanity hasn’t discovered how to make a singularity. But I do believe in UFO’s also.

DAY 37 - DECEMBER 26 PROMPT: "What is the worst event in history to ever have taken place, in your opinion? Could something like this possibly happen again?

I realize that many people will go for the tragedy In terms of quantity dead and injured: the World Trade Center, the Holocaust, genocide in Rwanda and Bosnia.

I’m choosing the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, April 14 1865. Maybe this is not the worst in the perspective of many: but in my perspective, this is the President who eradicated slavery (if only we could set him against human trafficking) and who worked himself to the bone to hold together a nation of disparate ideals and idoscyncracies awand greeds. Lincoln was a man of farsight and of great insight, probably the single President with the highest moral integrity and strength of character. I can’t think of another President who could compare. Oh, and add to that: Lincoln was a devoted father and husband, never unfaithful; and of how many Presidents in the 20th century could we say that?

Additionally, the “success” of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln created in U.S. political culture the notion that Presidents could be efficiently removed, not by the political and legal process of impeachment, but by death: murder. So followed the assassinations of Presidents Garfield and McKinley, then in 1963, JFK. Other Presidents have suffered from assassination attempts, even been injured: Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan. Failed attempts include:
• Andrew Jackson
• Abraham Lincoln
• Theodore Roosevelt
• Herbert Hoover
• Franklin D. Roosevelt
• Harry S. Truman
• John F. Kennedy
• Richard Nixon
• Gerald Ford
• Jimmy Carter
• Ronald Reagan
• George H. W. Bush
• Bill Clinton
• George W. Bush
• Barack Obama
• Some of these Presidents were the target of multiple attempts.
And 2 Presidential deaths have been rumoured to be the result of assassination: Zachary Taylor and Warren G. Harding (in both cases, some historians have suspected actual poisoning).
Looked at from the perspective of the closing of 2012, Presidential assassination seems to be pretty popular among dissidents (no, I do not mean ONLY “foreign terrorists,” but American-born as well). And it all started with Lincoln’s era. Sad.

December 22, 2012: What is one thing nobody knows about you because nobody ever cared to ask?

Well, I don’t think anybody’s ever asked to read my novels (or my other writings); certainly, no one outside of WDC. I’m sure there are tons of aspects of my individuality no one in “real life” wants to know or care to ask. I like to think I have depths of character; but many people (especially over the last forty something years) seem to be shallower and shallower and shallower. As a Sprite promotion once had it, “Image is everything.” Well, far from it, but people think so.

Almost ten AM in the Eastern Time Zone, and as every day, every week, I am at my computer, checking email for review requests and writing reviews of books I read yesterday. Guess we've survived:
no earthquakes nor rumours of earthquakes
no tsunamis nor rumours
no wars: whoops, we already had those
no Zombies
no Planet X, Nibiru, nor asteroid impact

December 21, 2012: What would you like people to say about you when you are gone from this earth?

Nothing: I don’t expect to be remembered. I’ve been mostly invisible in life, and really, that’s the way I prefer it. I never wanted fame, fortune, or power; only financial stability and that never came to pass. I don’t expect to be remembered after I’m gone, and my multiple unpublished novels will no doubt stay in that status: unpublished and never-known.

Move out;
Buy more books;
Hope again for a home of my own.

December 19, 2012: If I had 15 minutes to evacuate my home before it was to be destroyed by a hurricane, what 10 things would I grab? (not including people or pets)

We’re not subject to hurricanes here, but we are to tornadoes, earthquakes, forest fires. I was just thinking last night about Ruth Montgomery, the late journalist and channeller whose Guides predicted, I think in the 1980’s, that the Eastern Seaboard would be inundated by the Atlantic Ocean by 2000. Then yesterday I read Parker Lee’s “12-21-12,” in which the Apocalypse begins with earthquakes at midnight, world-wide, and continues with the rise of indigenous deceased and then zombies (which only attack Caucasians). So I guess I’m in the frame of mind for this one!

I live with my daughter, son-in-law, and 6 of the grandchildren. Daughter and son-in-law would get the kids; so I’ll get my two dogs, the Black Lab (that’s three), my Kindle Fire, my other e-reader which, when the right adapter finally arrives, will allow me to read epub format; and 5 books (the signed books by Kealan Patrick Burke and 2 other authors which were gifted me by a publisher, I suppose).
