Entry for the ABC's Poetry Challenge
As we go doggedly down this highway of life
Bearing these burdens of heartache and strife,
Children come bringing both joy and grief,
Determined to create their own motif.

Education soon emerges as a major concern,
Framing our efforts to help them learn,
Giving them a chance to make their own mark
Here in this world, which is certainly no lark.

Into the fray they charge, forging their own way,
Joining the skirmish to prove themselves without delay.
Karma pulls the strings, according to lore,
Leading them through opportunity’s next door.

Misfortune at times impedes their progress
Navigating the course, but they persist nevertheless,
Occupied by the promise of their dreams,
Pressing forward with their grand schemes,

Quite intent on reaching their goals,
Reaching for the sky without thought of tolls.
Success becomes a relative circumstance
Which cannot be left completely to chance.

Under the influences of Fate’s right hand
Vital elements mark our souls with their brand
Written in stone by the inherited genes that
X-rays, drugs and other treatments can’t combat.

Yet we all persist in striving with passion,
Zooming down this highway of life in headlong fashion.
