summer nights in Colorado and friendship
There we were,
nothing but dark sky
above,
broken only
by the blinding cracks
of light.

As we sit,
not talking,
with roughness,
as if sandpaper,
imprinting us like
timestamps
showing the hours we stay.

Ghostly we look
with each dazzling
flash,
as they come
closer each time.

The window behind us
gaping
like an open mouth,
spilling out noise
of a past
that was once ours.

So far away now,
nothing
         but us,
                   the light,
                             and the unspoken.
