An old timer has doubts about his accomplishments in life.
THE BEST IS YET TO COME

When the light begins to fade, and I seek my final rest,
my mind begins to ask of me, have I lived my very best?

I think about the future, and generations yet unborn,
have I earned their silent hatred, their envy or their scorn?

Am I leaving full of hope, or am I drenched with solemn fear,
of all those things I failed to do, for those I hold so dear.

Will God be there to help me learn, of heavens’ gentle ways,
or have my doubts and questing mind, turned me from his gaze?

When the light begins to fade, and I seek my final rest,
what will my children think of me, will I pass their solemn test?

Have I taught them how to live, a life of love and bliss,
or have I failed to teach them well, as they give their final kiss?

What awaits me over there, my thoughts cannot dispel,
Am I bound for heavens’ gate, or on my way to hell?

Is there a place called paradise, or is it a wishful thing,
or will my mind continue on, in a circle or a ring?

Am I doomed to come again, to this place of bitter strife,
or have I passed the final test, and seek eternal life?

When the light begins to fade, and I seek my final rest,
I think of all the lovely times, and of things that I detest.

I ask myself with guilt and shame, what more could I have said,
to ease the burden on my wife, when I am cold and dead?

Will I meet them all again, in a place called eternity,
or am I doomed to roam the earth, in ghostly agony?

And as the end draws quietly near, for this silly doubtful bum,
I will answer optimistically, the best is yet to come!

Contest prompt: When the light begins to fade.
I need to tweak this one a little…
