Duty versus beauty.
A PROMISE BROKEN

There was once a blind girl who
Hated all in the world,
Except a boyfriend who was
Around her finger curled.

She was enamoured of him,
But so she used to say:
If ever I get my eyes
I’d marry you that day.

Time passed and somehow the boy
Arranged secretly so
That his eyes he donated;
To the girl did they go.

When the girl could see again,
She looked for her boyfriend.
But, finding that he was blind,
She was shocked to no end.

He asked for her hand but she
Refused without remorse.
Marrying a blind boy would
Be a suicidal course!

Blindness was the biggest curse.
She knew, she had been blind.
How could she, with someone such,
Her future ever bind?

Without a second thought she
Declined to marry him.
He was taken aback by
Her selfish, cruel whim.

So, with his eyes full of tears,
He went away for good,
Saying, he hoped, of his eyes,
Take proper care she would.
