HAUNTED

I am haunted by the past, the ghosts do not rest.
Midnight brings them from their graves to taunt
and I am filled with memories of many years ago
for which these long-dead souls chose to haunt.

I fear the night when darkness falls around me
and I am left at the mercy of a restless sleep.
Those who walk with silent tread, long-dead,
pull me into a hell on earth only they can reap.

Icy chill infiltrates the room, I must try to breathe
but the coldness envelopes my being, I am lost.
In the shadows, they move closer, toward the bed,
to claim my worthless soul, no matter the cost.

I am not to blame, though blame I took for years.
"Go Away" I shout, as if my fear would not show.
In life they laughed when I was beaten down and
now they linger, a chance to strike another blow.

They will not rest beneath the old granite stones,
where names are engraved as if to make them stay.
But I am made of stronger stock, I am no captive,
with morning comes the light, they will fade away.

I have no memory of the nights they enter my mind
but what is the use of trying, there is no peace at all.
I am haunted by the past and by those who choose
to make a visit, knowing my terror when they call.
