Silence isn't always golden - sometimes, it hurts. [Twitterpated Rd. 2 entry]
One Is The Loneliest Number

"I'm engaged."

Seeing the blank look on his face, she went on.  "You came over and called and walked me home, but you never actually said anything...".

How could this be?  Completely unbidden, she'd given him his first real kiss right in her parents' kitchen!  His love for her, born when they were in junior high school, had survived two years away in Minnesota.  True, he hadn't written, but... how?

When they moved back for his high school senior year, he'd eventually asked her to his house.  Mom's dinner hadn't disappointed, everything had been great, and he was driving her home.  Now, with those few words, his world shattered.

Finally, he'd mumbled something that may have been 'Congratulations', but the rest of the trip was spent in silence, save for the seemingly endless string of love songs on the radio.
