A Free Verse Poem written for Stormy's poetry newsletter contest.
The murmuring sound of men
comes across the dark night sky;
the marching resonates like a
concert of percussions drumming a perfect beat,
intensifying with every count.

Listening to the enemy approaching,
some tremble with fear.
But the flame in their hearts is much stronger
than the fear of the army of men trespassing.

Determined they are to fight
for their homes, their families, and their land;
they refuse to let an army of men
overtake what is rightfully theirs.

Weapons are drawn and prayers are made.
As the loud sound of men finally come upon them,
it is quickly perceived they have not even a fighting chance.
But still, they stand resolute against the enemy.

As heroes, they are slain refusing to admit defeat.
The town is crimsoned by the heroes’ bravery,
then it is set aflame by the enemy’s men.
All that remain are the ashes of a prideful town that was.
