A poem about school days. . .
Never ever chew gum in school!
That's what the teachers used to say.
It was an almost holy rule,
Which one had always to obey.

Each September in the Fall season.
"Never ever chew gum in school!"
Was spoken without good reason,
Like a challenge to a deadly duel.

If you did not want to be a fool,
you studied hard to become smart,
But "Never ever chew gum in school!"
Was one thing that you learned by heart.

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic,
None of them seemed quite so cruel.
As the saying which made us sick,
"Never ever chew gum in school."

This poem is an Empat. It follows this rhyme scheme:

Stanza 1: A. b. a. b.

Stanza 2: c. A. c. a.

Stanza 3: a. d. A. d.

Stanza 4: e. a. e. A.
