Each of us are molded somewhat by our culture.
I'll be my own person one may reply.
I'll think for myself, others need not try
And persuade me of their opinion
Nor press me with their dominion
For I am somewhat self- made
And not so easily swayed
As to be another's cookie cut-out;
For I march to a different drum, there's no doubt.
But, what's to be said when we have a spot
Or carry a mark just like other leopords have got.
Twas said of our people in their civil war; that they prayed the same maker ; And they sought the same Lord.
But, when facing each other they both drew a sword!
And many of our ancestors while claiming themselves to be free
Put others in bondage: They hung slaves from a tree!
I don't understand this and it's very easy to say
How could they have done this, even in their day?
How can a civilized people display such a horrific abberation?
Because each is a product of their own generation!
And how could anyone be guilty of such horrible crimes?
Because each is a prisoner of their own times!
Someone has said that no man is an island entire to itself
And God says none are righteous: Only himself!
