Adopt a Pet Day.
The President decreed Adopt a Pet
was mandatory on an August day.
At first I thought it undeserved, and yet
the more I thought it through, I had to say
it was a noble cause, a benefit
for both the pet and those of us indeed.
I therefore rode the bandwagon, to wit,
I adopted my pet, a special breed
of cat bred in the mountains of Peru,
where Nazca lines surviving caused a stir
concerning ancient astronauts. If true
or not, it’s grist for milling as it were.
At any rate, I offer no regrets
for bringing home a Nazca cat, named for
that place of otherworldly chariots
flown with resolve above each snow-capped tor,
to a culture that‘s no more, expressing
homage, maybe, with enigmatic lines.
It’s a concept worthy of addressing
since, with the past, gold often fills the mines.
This is new American tradition:
Adopt a Pet Day was success, and in
my case, since it bettered my condition
of anxiety and sadness, a win.
