The Last Goodbye
By:Maddy

I walked out my door
And never looked back
I couldn’t bear that
I may not be back
When I gave my son
That nice long hug
And I never wanted to stop
I would fight for my country
For generations to come
But I knew my chances were slim,
To see my wife and son again.
I didn’t tell them that but instead
I said I promised that I’ll be back again
But in my heart I knew
I wouldn’t be back
The risk I took
Was eventually rewarded
To freedom and choices
And a long happy life
But my body lay
On a blood-covered hill
Surrounded by fellow soldiers
Who only wanted to come home again
Only if I could say,
one more goodbye
