A story of infertility.
Marriage into a ready-made family
puts a lot of demands on a woman.
Are you going to have a child of your own?
They ask.

You don't know the answer right away,
hesitating to cause too much disruption.
Well, have you decided to have a child yet?
They ask.

The decision is made, the love is strong -
you want a child that is both of yours.
When are you going to have that baby?
They ask.

A year later, two,
negative after negative.
Why don't you just relax?
They ask.

A few more years pass,
the frustration and pain never leave.
Have you seen a doctor yet?
They ask.

Yes, you've seen a doctor.
Yes, you've relaxed.
If it's meant to be, then it will be
They say.

You've given up, resigned,
and convince yourself it's for the best.
At least you can travel easier!
They say.

You're a few days late,
You're tired, nauseous, and achey.
Don't get your hopes up.
They say.

You're 10 days late, still not well.
You decide to test.
Good luck!
They say.

Is this a second line?
I'd given up - how did this happen?!
Congratulations!
They say.

After five years
I believe in surprises.
Welcome to my life, Sophie Aeryn!
I say.
