An entry for the WINNER AND NEW PROMPT contest
"You said you hate me!"
"That was then."
"So you do accept that fact."
"Like I said that was then, not now."
"What is the status now?"
"I don't anymore."
"You mean you don't know?"
"No, what I said was I don't anymore".
"So you may begin to hate from now this minute?"
"No, I won't".
"Oh, really?"
"Yup".
"Or may be from tomorrow or sometime in future?!"
"No, I won't?"
"How do you know that?"
There was silence. It was that thick it could be sliced with a knife, as silently and as quietly.
"I don't think I would do that. Its better we call it quits".
"No, I don't want to leave".
"..but I can't live with you. You must"
"No, I won't"
"Yes, you should".
"No I won't".
"Well, I insist"
"No you can't".
"What do you mean you can't?"
"Like I said, I won't leave you".
"What's the point? You hate me and you want to live with me under the same roof? Who would do that? I just can't get it"
"Who said I hate you?"
"You said, Did you not?"
"I said that a long while ago."
"So you did say that?"
"Ya, I did but then I was angry?"
"Oh k. So you were angry then."
"Like everybody has his or her moods right? So I was angry then."
"Now you aren't angry any more!"
"No I am not"
"So there's no guarantee that you wouldn't be angry again some time later?"
"I said that a million times already. What's the point?"
"The point is you can get angry again and begin to hate. That's the point!! So its better that you pack your bags and be on your way"
"No I am not doing that. I said that already"
"Its beyond me why any one who hates someones wants to live with that person under the same roof! Huh?"
"Like I said, I made up my mind. I am not leaving."
"Did you forget that you also said that you would leave?"
"No."
"What do you mean 'no'?"
"Exactly what I said.."NO". I am not leaving."
"You do remember that you said you would leave? Right?"
"Yep. I remember, but then it was then not now."
"What made you change your mind. You said it then, you could say it again next minute!"
"No. I made up my mind."
''You made up your mind and that you are going to be around?"
"Yes."
"Until I kick the bucket?!"
"Why do you say that?"
" ' cause that's what is going to happen if you are going to stay around"
"No, when I am around that wouldn't happen"
"Precisely. I wouldn't live if you are around. I would die every minute you are around. Its better to die once than die a million times."
"Look whose talking about death here"
"You. YOU. You are making me think and talk about death. If you leave, I would be happy. You would be happy. ' cos you don't have to hate. People who don't hate live longer. See?!"
"I don't hate."
"So you live longer. You live longer around here and make me hate you every minute."
"No."
"So I would die. I would die horribly. I would die terribly. Is that what you want?"
"No"
"Then why don't you simply leave and let me live in peace and happy and longer."
"Like I said, I don't want to leave."
"OK, if it comes to that may be it is better that I leave!!!"
"Where would you go?"
"Out away from under this roof. It is a wide world out there"
"No, you won't"
"Why not? If you are not leaving, then I should leave. We can't live together. Not after all this!!"
Flops down into the sofa.
Footsteps.
