Suspecting bass and unwilling salmon,
stalwart shark and meandering grouper,
adventurous ray and rouge beluga,
devotees of river, lake and sea...

...look forward to watery spaciousness,
that bounty of liquid sustenance
built of selection’s prime elements,
habitat of current, pressure and swirl...

...gathering in hopeful independence
the oneness of life and illumination,
that essential radiant clarity
sprawled smartly in ubiquitous direction...

...wherein irresistible nectars
pique lingering appetites needful for growth,
yet where death follows by gnawing toxicity
or point-blank baneful emptiness...

...learning through eon’s strict tutelage
that looking back serves only to thwart
survival and strength, entrapping in edgy
labyrinths allowing drawn-out demise...

...necessitating, instead, proper foodstuffs
and proper vision, reality based, independent
of wish, independent of any magic candle
wobbling on any windblown windowsill...

...realizing the cold exposed truth
that the best intentioned dishes
will in no way satisfy a soul
if the oven stays cold.
