Writing prompt: jump

"Just one more step...one final step."

"Jump, Jimmy. Jump!"

"We are waiting for you..."

...

Those voices in my head, they have been there for as long as I can
remember. I wish that they were just hallucinations, a product of my
imagination. But they seem so real, as real and clear as a whisper to
my ear in a silent night, and their allure as hypnotizing as my
deepest desires.

It has always been just me and them, in this lonely world void of
life and existence. And I've been following them for longer than
eternity, in this dreadful and purposeless existence of mine. Where
would I go otherwise, for they have been my only companions?

"Now, one more step" I whisper to myself, unaware of whether
it really is my talking, or just my body vocalizing the ghastly
voices swarming in my mind.

It's snowing, and the cold is as bitter as the taste in my
mouth. My subtle breath forms trails of tiny white crystals in the
air. It's almost appalling to me that I have not noticed such a
mesmerizing scene before. For a brief moment, my soulless eyes follow
those trails, allowing my mind to wander into the emptiness of this
reality.

"Jump, Jimmy!"

Damn voices.

Why am I doing this anyway?

I can hear my heart thumping and my pulse rising; I can feel every
inch of my skin exposed to the freezing wind; I can sense every
strain of my muscle trembling at the thought of diving into the icy
water beneath. It's all so quiet, yet so chaotic. My body is
resisting, and my instincts are defying the emotional mayhem of my
mind.

Why am I doing this?

"We are waiting for you."

Yet I can't go back this time, not here, not when I'm this
close.

Just one more step.

And I jump.

...

Time seems to stop. Snowflakes land on my face. I can almost feel
them melting.

Splash, and everything goes into a dreadful silence.

I can't move. The water is numbing, and my senses are shutting
down. I feel no pain, nothing at all.

It's so calm here, so peaceful. I should have been here long
ago. My consciousness starts to fade away like a dying candle. And I
close my eyes, giving up to the dire darkness that is to come...

...

Thump.

Warmth.

What is this sensation?

Thump.

A surge of life runs in my veins.

Thump.

My head is cracked open with an explosion of thoughts.

Thump.

Electrifying. And strangely ecstatic.

Thump.

"Jimmy?"

Those voices again?

Why are they here?

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

...

My eyes burst open.

And amid the abysmal darkness, I see a ray of light, radiant and
beautiful, like a star in a night sky.

And another light, and another, and another...

"JIMMY!"

....

---------------------

I open my eyes, burdened with fatigue.

Where is this place?

Why am I here?

And what is this thing in my nose? These tubes?

I grab the wire and fling it away with an utterly frail movement,
and my eyes catch the shocking gaze of the little figure in front of
me.

Who is he?

"Jimmy? Mom, it's Jimmy!"

"Oh my god Jimmy, you're awake!"

"After all these years Jimmy, we have been waiting for you!"

Waiting for me...

Such familiar voices.

Who are they?
